In May 2024, I organized a photogrammetry trip to Iceland to capture some cool Icelandic scenery on-location. We captured over 21,000 raw photos, filling up nearly 2TB of drives. I am extremely proud of the end result- a strikingly faithful representation of Djupalonssandur beach, though I am slightly inaccurately referring to it by the name of the nearby cove Dritvík.
This environment features nearly a full kilometer of explorable coastline, assembled and set dressed fully by hand. It's running in Unity 6 HDRP at over 140 FPS on an RTX 4080 at native 4K. The scans were carefully processed and optimized using tools like Reality Capture, Lightroom, Blender, and Substance. Each formation features 4 LODs plus low-poly shadow proxies. Every tiny detail of post-production work was performed directly by me. This was truly a passion project, I have been waiting for the opportunity to visit Iceland with the purpose of a large scale photogrammetry project ever since reading DICE's Battlefront photogrammetry presentation in 2015. I feel extremely blessed to have been able to do it.
Dritvík is location 1 of 3. I have arguably cooler scans still up my sleeve. Will I ever find the time to process them? Will my file server die before I get around to it? Tune in next time to find out!
